The Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund Scholarship Program recognizes students who have gone above and beyond in serving the school, contributing to the health and well-being of the people of North Carolina, and enhancing the reputation of the UNC School of Medicine. Scholarships are awarded based on merit, and a committee comprised of alumni, faculty, and staff will select recipients. The Loyalty Fund Scholarship Program is merit-based; criteria will be based on a student’s demonstrated commitment to service and leadership.
The UNC School of Medicine Medical Alumni Loyalty Fund scholarship program was established in 1966 with a modest stipend to six students. The program now provides more than 90 scholarships per year to outstanding students, all funded entirely by generous alumni contributions.
One-year scholarships are awarded to returning medical students. While each scholarship amount varies based on availability of funds each year, the minimum value of a Loyalty Fund Scholarship is $10,000. Current Loyalty Fund scholars (2025-2026) MUST reapply.
Students must enroll in the standard curriculum and remain in good standing* at the time of award disbursement to be qualified. A student may not receive a Loyalty Fund Scholarship more than three times during their time in medical school. Applications must be submitted by Thursday, January 22nd.
All applications will undergo a holistic review to determine one’s eligibility. As such, we ask that applicants to meet the following criteria based on their year:

Applications must be completed by January 22nd. Scholarship selection will be made in late Spring. Selected students will be notified as early as possible. Funds will be applied toward a student’s financial aid package (if applicable) and will be managed by the School of Medicine’s Financial Aid Office.
Recipients will be expected to correspond with the alumni who support their scholarship through thank you cards, letters, and/or e-mails. Recipients are also strongly encouraged to attend one to two alumni events during the year.
